Still Life & Memory: The Art of Geoffrey Robinson
At Modern Contemporary Art, we are delighted to support the Wayfarers Art Fair in Southport and to celebrate the remarkable career of Geoffrey Robinson, one of Britain’s most distinctive contemporary painters.
Born in East Africa in 1945, Geoffrey Robinson studied at Bournemouth College of Art during the 1960s before establishing successful careers in both advertising and music. Since committing himself fully to painting in the 1990s, he has developed a highly individual style of lyrical abstraction, combining still life, narrative, and decorative imagery with references to post-war culture and modern art.
Our exhibition, Still Life: The Art of Geoffrey Robinson, brought together key works that exemplify the artist’s signature visual language. Robinson’s paintings reflect the optimism, design, and popular culture of the 1950s and 1960s, shaped by his experiences as a commercial artist, musician, and composer before turning to painting full-time.
His work balances abstraction with nostalgia, producing compositions that are contemplative, iconic, and instantly recognisable. Drawing inspiration from both British and international modern artists working throughout his lifetime, Robinson has created a body of work that is both deeply personal and culturally resonant.
Geoffrey Robinson’s paintings have been widely exhibited and are held in numerous private and public collections. In 2004, ITV Meridian Television broadcast the documentary Geoffrey Robinson in The Frame, highlighting both his artistic career and the enduring appeal of his work.
As advisors to the Wayfarers Art Fair, we are proud to champion Geoffrey Robinson’s contribution to contemporary British art and to share his extraordinary work with collectors and audiences in Southport. In support of the fair’s ongoing commitment to arts and community engagement, Geoffrey Robinson and Modern Contemporary Art will donate a percentage of all exhibition sales to the Wayfarers Contemporary Art Fair’s partner charities, helping to support arts initiatives and creative opportunities within the local community.
